Brisbane Festival, the city’s premier arts festival, has today announced it will run for three weeks from 8-29 September 2012.
The biggest party of the year, Sunsuper Riverfire, will herald the beginning of Brisbane Festival on Saturday 8 September.
Brisbane Festival Artistic Director Noel Staunton said half a million people watched the pyrotechnic extravaganza last year and this year’s celebrations were pitted to be bigger and better than ever.
“Sunsuper Riverfire is always a family favourite and the introduction of lasers last year proved very popular - this year’s display is definitely one to mark on the calendar,” said Mr Staunton.
The annual arts festival, which is an initiative of the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council and supported by Principal Partner Channel Nine, will boast an exciting programme of music, theatre, dance, free entertainment and much more.
“September is festival time in Brisbane and the 2012 program should encourage the people of Brisbane to get out and try something new,” said Mr Staunton.
“This year’s Festival will bring another program full of new commissions and Australian and world premieres.”
Preparation for Brisbane Festival 2012 is well underway with applications now open for Under the Radar, the festival’s experimental arts programme.
Santos City of Lights will make a return to the line-up of free entertainment thanks to continued support from Events Queensland and Santos, and will come to life with a series of magical effects that will be
created with water, laser and pyrotechnics.
Last year, the laser light spectacular saw more than 185,000 people gather at South Bank to watch Brisbane’s skyline light up in a kaleidoscope of colour.
“Santos City of Lights captivated Brisbane last year and we’ve got some surprises in store to wow audiences again every night of the Festival in 2012.”
Last year’s Brisbane Festival attracted over one million people across 84 events, 20 of which were free.
Tickets for Brisbane Festival 2012 will go on sale early July.
